Cafe De Arts

September 2023
This series of three illustrations was made for a small coffee shop in Waukesha, WI as a means to represent the cafe’s international aesthetic, colourful character and intense appreciation of coffee.

The illustrations in the take out menu

I produced a lot of initial research prior to diving into sketches as I had to gather a collection of symbols and images that would properly represent the international roots in coffee.

The primary illustration represents Turkish coffee, depicting a cezve pouring coffee into an orante cup. The scene is framed by a coffee bean plant and a Turkish mosque on the horizon. Each illustration has a blank ribbon that allows for any text to be written on it. The pattern above the ribbon is inspired from a common Turkish pattern. This illustration was the most important of the three as the owners of the cafe migrated from Turkey and incorporate Turkish bakery on their menu.

The second illustration portrays France’s influence on cafe culture. It depicts a French press, croissant and cafe au lait. A coffee bean plant again frames the scene which incorporates the Eiffel tower on the horizon and French floral pattern on top.

The third illustrations represents the German coffee tradition depicted by the drip coffee technique. Here I incorporate kaffee und kuchen- a German cafe practice of pairing bitter coffee with sweet cakes. A German castle sits on the horizon and a common German pattern decorates the top.
