Simon’s Gardens Popcorn Labels

October 2023
This series of three labels was designed for three varieties of natural popcorn sold at the farm stand I’ve worked for in university after the company changed their packaging from plastic to glass bottles.

Redesigning Simon’s Garden’s popcorn labels was a great opportunity to incorporate my design work into my agricultural background. Due to the company’s limited budget, I restricted the colour scheme to two colours per label. The original sticker labels we used were small white rectangles with a splash of colour in the kernel variation. Customers have a tough time differentiating between varieties- especially between Black Jewel and Ruby Red- so I wanted each label to be visually distinct enough to be identified from a distance. Using a bold red, heavy black and eggshell white made the variaties easy to recognize without ever needing to read the product name.

The designs use the Broadsheet typeface for its authentic and natural look. A simple illustration of a corn cob provides the product with educational context for where the product comes from. The primary information- the name of the popcorn variety- is large and framed by supporting information and linear lines.

Ultimately, the design needed to be adjusted to better suit the client’s budget. A rectangular design proved to be more affordable than the custom shape of the original concept so I altered the top to be more accessible to the printers.
