Travel Itinerary Zine

Summer 2024
This travel zine was a personal project I designed for my travels to Germany in the summer of 2024. It was intended to be a portable guide that could fit in my pocket and fold out to display a map in case I got lost.

Ever since I was little, it had been my life ambition to visit Germany. After years of planning and saving up, I booked my plane ticket to Berlin and started sketching out the little travel book I would take with me.

This project began with a lot of research as I dug into Berlin’s sights and history scouring for the perfect itinerary.  Before I ever picked up a pencil, I studied Berlin’s metro system, restaurant scene and calculated how much time in a day could be spent on the move. Ultimately, I had to figure out how to cram a nine day tip onto eight “pages” and spent the early stages of this project drawing up a foolproof itinerary.

After establishing what information needed to be included, I was able to determine how I was going to work around the constraints of the zine’s size. I decided to save on space by combining the two travels days onto the cover, prioritizing what information was most important to communicate and presenting the hotel address and flight information on the most accessible face of the zine. This arrangement allowed the rest of the days to have their own page.

My design process revolved around numerous stages of sketching and paper prototypes. It was integral that the final product be small enough to fit in a pocket for ease of transportation so I found physical prototyping to be a useful step in the process. My biggest challenge was developing a way to communicate all the necessary information in a small condensed layout without sacrificing artistic merit and visual context.

Each spread includes digital illustration on one page and photography on the other to maintain a sense of consistency. I drew the scenes in Procreate and used Photoshop to piece everything together.
